Member of the Month, May 2025
Craig Barden

It’s Member of the Month time again, and for May, we’ve chosen a member who has shown incredible endurance, resilience and inner strength…

Coming back from some ill health to claim back his fitness, AND to smash a 100-mile race that had eluded him 3 times previously!

Meet Craig

Club Role and Adventures

Craig Barden is one of our club’s Ultra Runners, and can often be found out on the trails walking or running… Or, can be found on his YouTube channel, Running Cafe, where he documents and talks all about his adventures, his experiences, his health and what running means to him.

Openness and Milestone Moment

One of the many reasons we’ve chosen Craig this month is his openness and honesty about time away from running last year due to mental health issues (check out his channel to learn more), and for absolutely smashing the Thames Path 100-mile race on his fourth attempt.

A Supportive Force in the Club

Craig is also incredibly supportive of everyone around him, always ready with thoughtful encouragement and genuine interest in his teammates’ experiences and progression.

We’re proud to have Craig in the Harrier family

Q&A with Craig

Where are you from, and where do you live now?

Maidstone born and bred, and that’s where I currently reside!

What’s your occupation outside of the club?

Commissioner. It sounds confusing (to me also!), but I basically plan, buy, manage and improve public health services for Kent residents – with a focus on sexual health (contraception and STI testing and treatment).

What do you love most about running?

The list is as long as my arm but to summarise: mental & physical health, purpose, socialising, adventure and challenge.
I also love documenting my races, sharing thoughts and top tips, and everything in between on my YouTube channel – Running Cafe.

What’s the best thing about being a part of the Harriers?

The people. I love attending weekly club runs, chatting to different faces and making new friends. There’s such a wealth of diverse runners in the club, and it’s a real privilege to get to know more of them each week!

What’s your best sporting moment?

Finishing the Thames Path 100-mile ultramarathon in May 2025. This was my 4th attempt after three DNFs (2022–2024).
It was extra special given I’d only returned to running in December 2024 after an 8-month break. I was overweight, out of shape and just finishing recovery from severe mental health issues. The gratitude I felt crossing the finish line is unforgettable – it reminded me just how much I love this sport.

What song do you play when going for a personal best?

Any of the motivational training montage songs from the Rocky films (cheesy as hell, but no apologies!)

What’s your post-race treat?

If I can get my hands on it – boned KFC chicken! What a delight! I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Colonel Sanders for creating the most incredible food creation on the planet!
