The Event
Cotswold 113 Middle-Distance Triathlon & Aquabike
The weekend of 31st May and 1st June saw fourteen Maidstone Harriers venture west to Cirencester to take part in the Cotswold 113 middle-distance triathlon and aquabike. For many, this was their first experience of middle-distance multi-sport.
The central venue was the Lake 32 watersports centre, where the 1.9km single lap swim took place. The 90km bike course comprised two laps of the flat surrounding country roads. The 21.1km run consisted of three laps of mixed surface paths and roads around the lake.
Arrival and Preparation
We travelled up on Saturday for registration and, although we were staying in a variety of accommodation, we met up for a carb-loading dinner together in Cirencester, with many thanks to Emma Maule for organising a lovely social occasion.
Following dinner and a restless night’s sleep, we were up at 4 am for breakfast and to get to the lake ready to start our swim at 6:30. The friendly and helpful organisers gave us sequential numbers which enabled us to rack together, ideal for supporting each other to overcome any last-minute nerves.
Swim
We all started the swim together, left turn at the yellow buoys and right turn at the pink one. The lake was clear and a relatively balmy 20 degrees. Although there were over 900 competitors, it only became crowded at the buoys.

Bike
Exiting the water to the encouragement of Shouty Dave (if you know, you know), we were quickly out of wetsuits and onto the bike. The course had several out-and-back sections so we could regularly spot each other and offer encouragement. We were also cheered on by Jo Warren in transition and Sally Talbot and Mark Dopson, who were marshalling on the course.

Run
With the bike course complete, it was onto the run, and our support crew increased by Lizzie and the children. Again, there were sections where we could support and encourage each other as we ran.

Finish Line & Reflections
In true Harriers’ style, everyone waited to cheer their clubmates home. All completed the race safe and sound with great performances all round. A tough, well-organised and friendly race, which was very satisfying to complete. And 24 hours later, we have started to think about an event for 2026.
